Carpet Schmarpet

Our new abode came with wall-to-wall carpet. Our first instinct was to get rid of it and replace it with hardwood. Anxious to get in there and do something, we decided to rip it out ourselves.



The master bedroom was a breeze (just ask B, he did it all himself). The main living space wasn't hard, but we had to do one extra step in order to get the carpet out. The previous owners installed a door at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the the master bedroom. The door frame was installed over the carpet so we had to take it out in order to get all of the carpet off.



There are usually things about a previously owned home that make you wonder what the previous owners were thinking (WWTT?). Our first encounter with this was that door. First, it was an exterior door. Second, the door had a deadbolt on it. Third (and this was what bothered me the most), the trim was completely mismatched. It was as if they used leftover trim and lumber and could care less if it was painted.

As we were planning for hardwood floors, we were hoping that the wood underneath the carpet was still good. There's a significant difference price between refinishing old floors versus installing new floors. Unfortunately, we weren't so lucky to to have good wood underneath. While it looked promising by the front window, it just got crappier and disgusting as we made our way toward the kitchen.

O hai, pet pee!

It just makes you want to gag, doesn't it? The other thing even more disgusting than those floors was the carpet itself. It was DIRTY. Lesson learned, when ripping out carpet, make sure you're wearing mask. Ripping out carpet kicks up a lot of dust and given those stains on the subfloor, who knows what else happened on that carpet. Anyone want to venture a guess on what the previous owners did here?


My guess, a pool table.

It's all gone now. Good riddance!
